MLA BIBLIOGRAPHY STYLE

 

General Rules:

  • Center the title, Works Cited, at the top of the page.
  • Each reference should be listed in alphabetical order by the first piece of information provided.
  • The entire bibliography should be double spaced.
  • Do not double "double space" between citations.
  • The second line of the bibliography information is indented.
  • A title of the source can be either italicized or underlined.

 

Books:

A Book by One Author

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name). Title. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Meltzer, Milton. George Washington. New York : Franklin Watts, 1986.

 

A Book by Two or Three Authors

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name), and Author (First name Last name). Title. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Examples:

Scott, James W., and Roland L. De Lorme. Historical Atlas of Washington . Norman , OK : University of Oklahoma Press, 1988.

 

A Book by Three or More Authors

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First), et. al. Title. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Silverstein, Alvin , et al. Steroids. Hillside , N.J. : Enslow, l992.

 

A Book by a Corporate Author

Pattern:

Name of Company. Title. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

American Telephone and Telegraph. Annual Report, 1982. New York : American Telephone and Telegraph, 1983.

A Book with an Editor and no Author

Pattern:

Editor (Last name, First name), ed. Title. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Sullivan, Robert, ed. One Nation. Boston : Time Warner, 2001.

 

A Book with an Author and an Editor

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name). Title. Ed. (First name Last name). City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Newton , David E. Chemcial Elements. Ed. Lawrence W. Baker. Detroit : UXL, 1999.

 

A Book in a Series

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name). Title. Name of Series. Number in Series (if there is one). City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Kent, Deborah. The American Revolution. Berkley Heights , NJ : Enslow, 1994.

 

Multivolume Work

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name). Title. Number of volumes. City of Publication : Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example:

Leish, Kenneth W. "Paul Revere's Ride." Events Before Independence : To 1775. The American Scene. 1. Danbury , CT : Grolier, 1999.

 

Bible - Only place specific version on the Works Cited page:

The New Jerusalem Bible. Ed. Henry Bough. New York : Doubleday, 1988.
(Incidentally, in your paper the word Bible should not be underlined.

 

ENCYCLOPEDIAS-Print only

General Encyclopedia or Dictionary with Author's Name (Signed article)

Pattern:

Author (Last name, First name). "Title of Article." Book Title. Edition. (Edition may just be the year.)

Example:

Tobias, Richard C. "Carnegie, Andrew." World Book Encyclopedia. 1980 ed.

 

General Encyclopedia, dictionary, no Author's Name (Unsigned article)

Pattern:

"Title of article." Book Title. Edition. Year. (if edition and year are different)

Example:
